at The Lodge at Sonoma Sonoma, California
On April 21 - 23, the California Cheese & Butter Association held its 40th Annual Convention at The Lodge at Sonoma. The theme "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants - Honoring Our Pioneers" provided the underlying message throughout the seminars and activities.
Friday's seminars were highlighted with updates by Bruce German/Ph.D., UC Davis on the ongoing health research done at the school relating to dairy products, in general and butter, specifically. Also presented was a historic and contemporary perspective of the dairy industry by Joe O'Donnell, Ph.D. California Dairy Research Foundation. The annual Butter Trend Report was offered by Bud Touhy/Vice President Challenge Dairy Products, Inc.
Seminars held Saturday morning were lead off by the Cheese Report detailed by Jim Taylor/Cacique, USA. California state legislative information relating to the dairy industry was outlined by David Viviani/Sonoma Foods as well as updates to the CCBA Scholarships by Jennifer Mullen/Modesto Convention and Visitor's Bureau.
The main topics for Saturday were a historic and contemporary dairy perspective prepared by Peggy Biltz/CEO, Dairy Council of California. John Bruhn, Ph.D. brought cheese industry innovators information through his presentation of a review of state and national dairy food pioneers and leaders. Christine Bruhn, Ph.D. concluded the seminar portion of the activities by offering a consumer perspective on the research of cheese and other dairy products as a source of important nutrients, especially calcium.
Activities throughout the 3-day seminar included a Friday afternoon golf tournament held at the difficult StoneTree Golf Club in Novato. Later that evening the "40 Years Ago - 1965" (60's attire) wine and cheese reception, dinner and dancing was enjoyed by all attending.
Saturday evening's semi-formal dinner and program was held in the historic Barrel Room at the Sebastiani Winery and included a silent auction to benefit the CCBA Scholarship program as well as installation of the officers and board of directors for 2005-2007. The new officers for the next two years are: Barry Zuroff/Horizon Sales Corp. - President, David Viviani/Sonoma Foods - 1st Vice President, Terry Fyffe/Churny Co. - 2nd Vice President, Jennifer Mullen/Modesto Convention and Visitors Bureau - Treasurer. The entertainment for the evening was capped by Peter Girardot, tenor and Maria Piganati, soprano from the San Francisco Opera offering famous Italian opera selections.
The annual seminar will be held next year at The Hilton Waterfront Hotel and Resort across Pacific Coast Highway from famous Huntington Beach. The dates for next year are May 4 - 6, 2006.
