2005 CONVENTION
By: Barry Zuroff, President

On April 21 - 23, the California Cheese & Butter Association held its 40th Annual Convention at The Lodge at Sonoma. The theme "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants - Honoring Our Pioneers" provided the underlying message throughout the seminars and activities.

Friday's seminars were highlighted with updates by Bruce German/Ph.D., UC Davis on the ongoing health research done at the school relating to dairy products, in general and butter, specifically. Also presented was a historic and contemporary perspective of the dairy industry by Joe O'Donnell, Ph.D. California Dairy Research Foundation. The annual Butter Trend Report was offered by Bud Touhy/Vice President Challenge Dairy Products, Inc.

Seminars held Saturday morning were lead off by the Cheese Report detailed by Jim Taylor/Cacique, USA. California state legislative information relating to the dairy industry was outlined by David Viviani/Sonoma Foods as well as updates to the CCBA Scholarships by Jennifer Mullen/Modesto Convention and Visitor's Bureau.

The main topics for Saturday were a historic and contemporary dairy perspective prepared by Peggy Biltz/CEO, Dairy Council of California. John Bruhn, Ph.D. brought cheese industry innovators information through his presentation of a review of state and national dairy food pioneers and leaders. Christine Bruhn,

Ph.D. concluded the seminar portion of the activities by offering a consumer perspective on the research of cheese and other dairy products as a source of important nutrients, especially calcium.

Activities throughout the 3-day seminar included a Friday afternoon golf tournament held at the difficult StoneTree Golf Club in Novato. Later that evening the "40 Years Ago - 1965" (60's attire) wine and cheese reception, dinner and dancing was enjoyed by all attending.

Saturday evening's semi-formal dinner and program was held in the historic Barrel Room at the Sebastiani Winery and included a silent auction to benefit the CCBA Scholarship program as well as installation of the officers and board of directors for 2005-2007. The new officers for the next two years are: Barry Zuroff/Horizon Sales Corp. - President, David Viviani/Sonoma Foods - 1st Vice President, Terry Fyffe/Churny Co. - 2nd Vice President, Jennifer Mullen/Modesto Convention and Visitors Bureau - Treasurer. 2006 CCBA ANNUAL CONVENTION
CATCHES THE WAVE

By: Renae Nelson, 2006 Convention Chair

On May 4, 5 and 6, 2006, the surf will definitely be up in Huntington Beach, pulled ashore by the rising tide of enthusiasm for the California Cheese and Butter Association's Forty-First Annual Convention.

Forty-one years is a solid record. 1964! It was a leap year. The Winter Olympics were held in Innsbruck, the Summer Games in Tokyo. Lyndon Johnson was re-elected President and America's involvement in Southeast Asia increased. Mary Poppins, Goldfinger, Viva Las Vegas, Dr. Strangelove, and A Fistful of Dollars were on at the movies. On our radios and LP turntables we listened to Twist and Shout by the Beatles, Under the Boardwalk, You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling, and I Want to Hold Your Hand. And the California Cheese and Butter Association held its First Annual Convention.

The music, the theme (in 1964 it was the Beach Boys singing, I Get Around), and the excitement all continue in May, 2006 at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort in Huntington Beach, when the Convention theme will be, appropriately, Catching the Wave!

A full slate of speakers and topics are scheduled, with a rock-solid presentation on the Atkins/South Beach diet (Catch the Wave!), an update on trans and fatty acids, talk about lactose intolerance and yogurt, and a presentation on fresh and specialty cheese and wine pairings.

Between trips across the Pacific Coast Highway to the beach to Catch the Wave, and golf outings at nearby Mile Square Golf Course (bring your handicap and your clubs) Craig Nelson of Mission Controls Automation will speak about the Bioterrorism Act of 2002 and the requirements it puts on our CCBA members for compliance.

Other topics will round out a spectacular ride: sanitation topics, packaging and HTST talk, and a roundup of the State of the Industry.

All in all, it's going to be a professionally run, professionally interesting, and personally gratifying experience. Just don't forget your sunscreen.
