2003 CCBA Convention The California Cheese and Butter Association
held it 38th annual Conference on the picturesque coastline of Monterey, California.
The gala event, held May 1 – 3, 2003 was attended by cheese and butter manufacturers,
retailers, brokers and distributors from throughout the United States.
Featured speakers included Jerry Dryer, Editor and Publisher of The Dairy and Food
Market Analyst, Carl Graziani, President of SCS Network, formerly with Safeway,
Joe O’Donnell Ph.D., Executive Director, California Dairy Research Foundation
and David Ikari, Branch Chief, Dairy Marketing Branch, California Department
of Food and Agriculture.
Tom Ditto of Challenge Dairy Products Inc., CCBA President, reported on the Trends
in Butter Production and the future. Jim Taylor, of Cacique USA presented national
cheese volume figures and the impact of the growing Hispanic population on the dairy
industry. David Viviani of Sonoma Cheese Factory gave an overview of the many
legislative issues facing the industry. Judy Norton of Noresland Inc. presented
this year’s winner of the Doug Johnstone Memorial scholarship.
Mike Levy of Tony’s Fine Foods was inducted into the CCBA Hall of Fame. As he
accepted his award he stated that “he has been very honored to be associated
with a group who has given so much to the industry and one that continually
strives to promote quality cheese and butter products”.

At our convention, Bill Goodrich, the CEO of California Agribusiness Credit
Union gave a presentation detailing the benefits of joining the CACU Credit Union.

![]() 2002 - 2003 CHEESE BLOCK MARKET FORECAST After sitting out the last issue of the Moos, it probably bears repeating how this column works. We don’t so much predict the market as simply apply a cheese conversion formula to the Class III milk futures prices on the CME. This method trusts the collective bias of the pros who are betting real dollars in the trading pits rather than any one individual’s subjective opinion on where the market may be headed! Here is our formula: Block price = (Class III divided by 10) + $.165/lb. Using this formula, here is our forecast based on Class III futures closing prices of May 23, 2003:
