A Letter from
our President,
Don Crabtree

Happy 2005! January and February are flying by so fast the recent holiday season seems like a distant blur. Two Thousand Four was a fantastic year for me and the California Cheese and Butter Association. I hope 2004 was a great year for you and that 2005 is even better.

A lot has happened in the CCBA over the past several months. Let’s take a brief look at some of the events:

Most recently, on December 9, 2004 we had our Third Annual Holiday Meeting at the prestigious Club 33 in Disneyland. We had 24 people sign up for the breakfast. This was the largest and most successful holiday event on record. Based on member response we are expecting even more participation in 2005. Additionally, we will go back to a luncheon format rather than the breakfast meeting we tested in 2004.

A special thanks goes out to Terry Fyffe and the Churny Company for making this beautiful facility available to the CCBA.

I want to take this opportunity to welcome Jennifer Mullen as our newest officer in the CCBA. Jennifer accepted the appointment as Treasurer at a recent Board of Directors meeting in Southern California. Jennifer has been a member of the CCBA since the early 1980’s and has been on our Board of Directors for five years. She worked actively on various committees and she was chairperson for our Monterey Convention in 2003. Jennifer is currently the Executive Director for the Modesto Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and she continues to be very active in the Cheese and Butter industry as a marketing consultant.

Another special thanks goes out to Joanne Mesta for her years of service as the Treasurer for the CCBA. Joanne will be missed at our meetings. Joanne volunteered to be our full time Treasurer and she did a fantastic job as Treasurer for seven years. Joanne has been awarded a lifetime membership in the CCBA and will continue to be active in the CCBA.

Heather Holtslander of Select Trade Sales and Marketing was appointed to the CCBA Board of Directors representing Northern California and unanimously approved. Heather has been a member of the CCBA for several years and has been active volunteer since the very beginning. Heather has been in the perishable food industry for her entire career and has a wealth of knowledge and energy to share with the CCBA. We are very happy to have Heather as a member and as a Director of the CCBA.

Renae Nelson of Mission Controls College of Automation was appointed to the CCBA Board of Directors representing Southern California and approved. Renae has been a member of the CCBA for many years and has been active in the organization since joining. Renae has been with Mission Controls since it’s founding in 1987. Renae actively participates in many associations and we are pleased that she has joined us as a Director of the CCBA.

Membership -- We are in the middle of our 2005 Membership Drive and we are doing quite well, thanks to the efforts of Barry Zuroff and strong member’s support. Barry is our First Vice President and 2005 Membership Chairperson. He reports that we have 39 member companies (2005 objective 60 member companies) and 20 associate members (2005 objective 33 associates). We are well on our way to reaching our 2005 goals but Barry is encouraging all members to get involved in this important part of our proud organization.

2005 CCBA Convention -- I am getting excited about the upcoming convention. David Viviani, Second Vice President of the CCBA and Chairperson for the 2005 CCBA Convention and Reunion Committee reports that they have been working at a fevered pace and well on their way to a fantastic convention. Based on what I have seen and heard, this could well be the best CCBA Convention ever. The 2005 CCBA Convention will be held at the Lodge at Sonoma between April 21 - 24, 2005. Based on early response I recommend you make your plans to attend the convention early and make your hotel reservations as soon as possible to make sure you are at the convention hotel.

To all of our fine members a hearty thank you for your support of the California Cheese and Butter Association. We look forward to your continued support in 2005.

Look forward to seeing you in Sonoma at the CCBA Convention in April.

CCBA Convention & Reunion
“Standing on the Shoulders of Giants”
By: Ruth Webber

How California's dairy products attained their 2005 economic importance will be described at the California Cheese & Butter Association (CCBA) 40th Convention and Reunion. The anniversary meetings will be at The Lodge at Sonoma, a Renaissance Resort and Spa, April 22 and 23.

"Standing on the Shoulders of Giants" is the theme for speakers: Joe O'Donnell, California Dairy Research Foundation; Bruce German, Dairy Researcher/Scientist at UC Davis; John & Christine Bruhn, Dairy Scientists at UC Davis, Peggy Biltz, Executive Director, Dairy Council of California, and David Freedheim, California Milk Advisory Board.

Dr. Bruhn will cite changes created by the "masterminds of dairying," Louis Pasteur to Gail Bordon, as well as California leaders such as Sen. McColl in Redding. McColl assisted in the California Water Project, the Big Ditch moving water from Northern California to Southern.

He operated McColl's Dairy in Redding, now owned by Crystal Cream and Butter Company in Sacramento. Others will include David Jacks, who developed Monterey/Jack cheese.

Dr. O'Donnell will describe creation of The California Dairy Research Foundation in 1988 by dairy producer and processor groups wanting to increase support for research. More milk than ever before created a saturated fluid milk market, and forced the search to use latest technology to create value-added products.

Peggy Biltz will describe new research on value of dairy foods, going beyond osteoporosis prevention, to cancer, hypertension, and weight management.

Dr. German will report about the butter research; Bud Tuohy of Challenge Dairy Products Inc., about the butter market. Jim Taylor, Cacique Inc., will summarize the cheese report. David Viviani, Sonoma Cheese Company, is chair of the convention. Don Crabtree is CCBA president. David Freedheim, past CCBA Honoree, will be the Master of Ceremonies.

Registration begins Thursday, April 21 at 3:00 p.m. Dinner will be on your own that evening. Friday night, a special 1965 theme dinner is planned. A dinner at Sebastiani Winery for recognition and awards ends the meeting Saturday.

To register, call 925-672-8255 or visit the CCBA website at www.cacheeseandbutter.org. The CCBA now accepts credit cards!

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
By: Tom Ditto

Over 10,000 runners, walkers, and other participants converged on Crissy Fields in San Francisco to attend the 14th Annual San Francisco Komen Race for the Cure. It was another beautiful fall day in San Francisco near the base of the Golden Gate Bridge with the Golden Gate Bridge to the left and a panoramic view of the S.F. skyline to the right.

The California Cheese & Butter Association once again was an integral part of the event with a booth in which the association donated cheese portions, cheese recipes and butter coupons to very appreciative participants. The samples were greeted by one enthusiastic runner with the statement, “This is the best thing ever!”

Thank you to all of the generous companies involved in donations.

Boggeri Sales and Marketing
Challenge Dairy Products Inc.
Lifeline Food Company, Inc.
Masson Cheese Corporation
Norseland Inc.
Rondele Specialty Foods
Saputo Cheese USA, Inc.
Sonoma Cheese Company
Tillamook Food Sales, Inc.

In addition to the donations above, Linda Viegas with Select Trade Sales and Marketing, braved the early hours to come work the booth. Linda and I agree that “work” is not the right word as the appreciations we received from the attendees made the time much less than work. This race was rather special for the CCBA, and I am sure the whole Komen Foundation as we all got to see one of our own, Mike Boggeri and his son Andrew, not only help at the booth but at race time hit the starting line and finished the race in strong fashion. Pictures will be available at the 2005 convention!!!

Thanks again to all of the companies and people involved in this event and make a trip to the Bay area in 2005 to attend the race!

CCBA’S HOLIDAY LUNCHEON

CCBA will be hosting a holiday luncheon meeting at Club 33 in December followed by a play day at Disneyland and California Adventure. More details will follow.
