The American Cheese Society conference will be held in Northern California in the year 2000!
August 9-13 at the Doubletree Hotel in Rohnert Park, California. I would encourage all of you to attend. It is very educational and a good place to meet with industry leaders. For more information call 414.728.4458 or check out the ACS website: www.cheesesociety.org There is a wonderful new book available for children. This sensitively written book, from a Marin County, California author, Alberta (Bobbie) Stornetta (yes, the dairy family) offers young readers positive ways of perceiving and reacting to the challenges of daily living…but with a heart felt twist. To order “From the Heart of Candy”, send $16.10 (includes tax & shipping) to Bale O’Hay Publishing, PO Box 573, Mill Valley, CA 94942. The author is happy to inscribe the books on request. The Mooos highly recommends it for children 2-9 years of age (or us big kids)! Researchers Find Link Between a Lowfat, Dairy-Rich Diet and Lack of Weight Gain! A study presented at the North American Association for the study of Obesity’s (NAASO) annual meeting revealed the low fat dairy foods such as cheese, milk and yogurt may help control body fat. Michael Zemel, the study’s leading researcher and department head for the Nutrition Institute of the University of Tennessee said, ”A diet high in lowfat dairy caused fat cell to make less fat and turns on the machinery to break down fat, which translates into a significantly lower risk of obesity”. While showing positive fat reduction results for all adults, the study found that women benefit most by consuming lowfat dairy products. Thank mooo to the Cheese Reporter for this information. California’s Cheese Production Growing More Than Twice As Fast As US Average! California’s dynamic cheese industry is poised to register record annual growth in 1999 at the rate of more than double the national average, according to the California Milk Advisory Board. Preliminary estimates from the California Department of Food and Agriculture indicate that California cheese production increased by 13.4 percent during the first 10 months of the year, more than double the average US growth of 5.9 percent for the same period. In quaint terms that translates into an additional 137 million pounds of CHEESE!

Thank mooo to the Cheese Reporter and the California Milk Advisory Board for this information. The California Cheese & Butter Association has joined as a supporter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, a nationwide organization dedicated to breast cancer research. The “Race for the Cure” events are conducted in 98 cities across the US. CCBA had a booth and a team of runners at the last Southern California event and plan to do the same September 24th, 2000. Jean Hendrix, CCBA President and Vice President of Masson Cheese Corporation was the passion behind the project. She and a wonderful team of CCBA volunteers passed out 2,000 pounds of cheese and were exposed to 28,000 people! GO TEAM! Butter Mooos! There is finally a butter website.
