2010 CCBA “Mission Possible” Convention = Mission Accomplished        

The 45th Annual CCBA convention was held April 29 – May 1 at the historic Mission Inn, Riverside, California.

The weekend began with Thursday’s golf tournament at the beautiful Oak Quarry Golf Club in Riverside.  Guests were free to have dinner on their own that evening.

Following Friday morning registration, the business meeting opened with Mac Moore/Chateaux Cheese Corporation who covered the annual cheese report.  Bud Tuohy/Challenge Dairy Products, Inc. discussed the status of the butter market.  Jim DeKeyser/DPI Specialty Foods followed with a presentation about DPI’s role in the industry.  Mission Inn’s Executive Chef gave a brief talk and followed by an afternoon break of hors d’oeuvres using the cheese and butter donated by the attendee companies.

The business meeting continued with Kimberly Clauss/National Dairy Board, who spoke about her work with the National Dairy Board.  Cathy Strange/Whole Foods presented the Whole Foods Story.  Friday evening’s Mission Trivia dinner and costume party was a huge success and the trivia games were an enjoyable team building experience.

Saturday’s business session began with CCBA Treasurer, Jennifer Mullen/Modesto Convention & Visitor’s Bureau who gave the Treasurer’s report.  Judy Norton/Norseland Inc. then covered membership news of the past year.  Paul Sullivan/Norseland Inc. discussed the status of the cheese industry and Norseland, and John Montandon/Say Cheese spoke about the launch of the Say Cheese Magazine and future plans for the distribution and sale of the magazine. Nicole Wiggins/Symphony IRI Group gave a report on the current trends of the dairy market. 

After the morning break, John Fiscalini/Fiscalini Cheese Company covered life on the farm and Fiscalini’s cheesemaking operation.  Terry Fyffe/Churny Company then spoke about his perspective on the cheese industry.  John Vitale/Gelson’s Markets followed with a presentation on his work with Gelson’s. 

The elections were held and the membership voted John Fiscalini to succeed David Viviani as President.  The CCBA Officers for the coming year are John Fiscalini/Fiscalini Cheese Company – President, Bud Tuohy/Challenge Dairy Products, Inc. – 1st Vice President, Darcie Gettings Gorman/Pacific Cheese Company – 2nd Vice President and Jennifer Mullen/Modesto Convention & Visitor’s Bureau – Treasurer; Directors are Gayle De Caro/Gelson’s Markets, Larry Eiffert/JTJ Sales, Pete Friedman/Horizon Specialties, Jean Hendrix/BelGioioso Cheese, Mark Mazur/Great Lakes Cheese, John Montandon/Say Cheese, Mac Moore/Chateaux Cheese Corporation, Jerry Simms/Challenge Dairy Products, Inc. and Michael Tsoules/Churny Company. 

Bud Tuohy/Challenge Dairy Products, Inc. followed with an announcement regarding the location of the 2011 CCBA Convention – The Claremont Hotel Club & Spa in Berkeley, California.  A future planning luncheon was held after the business session, and guests were adjourned to a free afternoon in Riverside. The business presenters and topics were well received by the convention attendees.

Saturday evening’s Gala Dinner took place in the beautiful Galleria and included a live and silent auction, awards and dancing.  Terry Fyffe/Churny Company was honored as the 2010 CCBA Hall of Fame inductee.  Dan Madsen accepted the Company of the Year award on behalf of DPI Specialty Foods. Lifetime Achievement award was given to John Vitale/Gelson’s Markets.
