THE MOOOS is pleased to report that the 32nd California Cheese & Butter Convention, "California The Golden Marketplace" at Silverado Resort, Napa, California was a great success. The speakers were excellent. Topics varied but, all concentrated on how to promote, sell and position cheese and butter for the current 90’s trends. Jerry Anne Di Vecchio, the Food editor for Sunset Magazine, spoke about her subscribers trends towards home meal replacement and easy ethnic. Jeff Manning, from the California Fluid Milk Processor Board, caught us up to speed on the delightful "GOT MILK?" campaign and Nancy Fletcher, Director of Communications at the California Milk Advisory Board presented the "IT’S THE CHEESE!" campaign for the 1997 year along with some wonderful future plans. Then John Bruhn Director of Dairy Research Information at U.C. Davis, did a short cheese and butter grading course that was very educational for the attendees. Keep your eyes out in The Mooos for more information about grading. Dr. Christine Bruhn, who is trained in consumer behavior, food science, and consumer economics and teaches at U. C. Davis, shared with us what consumer studies have found out. Stay tuned to The Mooos for more information about that!

MORE CHEESE!! Per capita cheese consumption in the US hit a record 27.73 pounds, up almost half a pound - about 1.7 percent - from 1995’s record per capita consumption of 27.26 pounds, according to preliminary estimates released by the US Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service. Thank mooo to The Cheese Reporter for this information.

WATER BEDS WORK! In our February edition of Mooos we ran a story that said a Dutch factory was making water beds for cows. Now we have reports from England that "cows that sleep on water beds are happier and produce more milk", according to a farmer whose animals have been lying in luxury for three years. Milk yields are up about 7 per cent and vet bills have been slashed. They no longer see the damaged knees and hocks, cut teats and bruised shoulders that the cows used to suffer. This farmers biggest savings has been on straw, cows using the beds no longer need straw! Thank mooo to the London Times via the web for this story!

SONOMA CHEESE FINISHES GREAT RACE!! Sonoma Cheese Factory’s 1931 Ford AA 1 -1/2 - ton truck successfully finished the MBNA American Great Race XV - a cross country vintage car rally - early this month. The truck which carried David Viviani, proprietor, Sonoma Cheese and his son Peter, didn’t win any money but the novelty truck did attract a lot of attention! The Vivianis drove about 400 miles a day and went through 14 states. Along the race route the Vivianis handed out ¾ -ounce Hot Pepper Jack, cards with recipes on one side and truck information on the other, and visitor guides to Sonoma! Way to go!! The Mooos thinks this was a very creative and fun marketing. Thanks to The Cheese Reporter for the details!
